As the Director of Planning and Design for the Sutter Health System, I am responsible for the successful planning and design of over 30 affiliate acute care hospitals.  One of our more complex and exciting projects is Sutter Medical Center Sacramento.  This project is intended to consolidate operations of two acute care centers (and two very different cultures) and involves development of a new hospital housing Women’s and Children’s services with key operational and support connections to an existing adult care facility which houses our Cardiology Services and Neurosciences as well as all other general Med/Surg Units.   We fully anticipate that the new Sutter Medical Center will offer the very latest in technology and clinical advancements in the heart of urban, downtown Sacramento.

Your “process-led” approach offered insight and guidance that is already equating to an improved bottom line.  This decision has proven to be pivotal in several ways:

• High level, multidisciplinary examination of existing processes led to discovery of improvement opportunities that are already being deployed to improve customer service and operational efficiency
• Improved staff/physician collaboration through the facilitation of focused dialogue is enabling acceptance to a tremendous change.  Without this acceptance, this project could have failed
• The project budget was optimized by permitting significant reductions in redundancies in the initial space program and the acceptance of new operational process models that promise to reduce operational costs as well as capital costs, with no compromises whatsoever to the potential for positive outcomes.
